Dump trucks can be some of the most impressive rolling hardware ever built. Giant mining trucks like the Caterpillar 797B capture the imagination of just about every young child, with the ubiquitous photos of a family sedan parked next to the truck's 13-foot tire that could crush it like a pancake.

A real Cat 797B is no cheap pleasure - they cost anywhere from $4.6 to $5.7 million, and each tire will run you $40,000. Fortunately, unless you operate a giant strip mine, your needs will be much more modest. If you run a farm or a construction or demolition company, you will need a standard full-size dump truck which it's possible to buy used at around $50-100,000.

There are many used heavy equipment classified sites to choose from, and it'll usually be possible to find a decent deal on a dump truck. Many sellers may be willing to negotiate, so it always pays to call and try to haggle the price down to something that's more manageable for you. Unless there are undeclared problems with the vehicle that will cost you many thousands to repair, going with a used truck is almost always a cheaper and much better option than buying a new vehicle at full price. For this reason, it's always a good idea to inspect the rig before you put down the money - or, if you don't know enough about cars, bring an experienced friend who can tell you the score.

If you don't have the budget or need to buy a dump truck, there are a number of ways to rent one, as well. Many classified sites have listings for truck rentals; if you can't find what you need, you could also put up an announcement yourself, listing the required specifications and desired price range. Conversely, if you have dump trucks or other heavy equipment that sits unused in your lot, you can put up an ad offering it for rent, to make the vehicles work for you instead of sitting idly.
