When it comes to loading large and unwieldy objects into truck beds, grapple trucks are some of the handiest tools ever created. Whether you are facing a tree removal or simply need to dispose of a large pile of construction debris, a grapple truck can do the job in a tenth of the time and with a fraction of the effort that it would take human workers.

The basic characteristic of a grapple truck is a long hydraulic manipulator arm, with a variety of attachments at the end. The attachment can be a standard excavator scoop or a rake, or a clam bucket for loose materials, but for trash and tree disposal, a two-lobed grapple is most frequently used. The grapple is made wide, in order to be able to pinch a sizable amount of debris, or a whole tree trunk, without needing extra support.

Grapple trucks all come with a grapple boom, and a variety of configurations for storage and transportation. Rear-mounted loader trucks have nothing but a grapple mounted on a short bed, with an operator's cabin that pivots together with the arm. Materials are loaded into a second truck's bed, then carried away. A rear steer system is the same thing, except driving controls for the whole grapple truck are also routed to the operator's cab, which allows a worker to move the truck as needed while operating the grapple arm.

Other grapple trucks incorporate transport options together with a boom. A standard loader and body system truck has a long chassis that incorporates an open tipping box, so the same vehicle can both pick up refuse and transport it. Another configuration is the rear-mounted loader and trailer system. This flexible system incorporates a rear-mounted grapple truck which can haul a two-wheeled tipping trailer, giving the operator the option of using the grapple truck as a self-contained loading and disposal unit, or as a loading unit in conjunction with autonomous disposal trucks.
